About the questionnaire

The questionnaire is designed to encourage players of any standard to get together to enjoy playing string quartets. Your response will be added to a database of quartet players which will be made available only to those completing the questionnaire. You must explicitly consent to the sharing of your data with other private individuals who are members of the database.  It will never be used for any other purpose.  Your details may be removed from the database at any time on request. Any abuse of the database will be strictly monitored. Please report any concerns you may have to Jim.

Identification is by email address – by all means create a gmail address specially for this purpose, provided you are able to check it regularly.

The questions include details of which instrument(s) you play, some idea of your standard of play, and your favourite quartet music.  It also includes practical details such as the days/times you are available to play quartets, and whether you are willing to host a session.

Location is required – this is to tell people how far they will have to travel.  Do not give more than the nearest village, town, or city suburb.  If you are hosting a session, you will then need to provide detailed directions to your guests, of course.

‘Standard of play’ is a difficult one – the ability to play a given piece of music varies depending on many factors – how often you have played it before, what key it is in, how fast you take it, even how good the other players are !    And playing your part in a quartet adds another level of complication – now you have to listen and respond to what three other players are doing.

Some players are keen to tackle more difficult pieces, others just want to relax after a hard day’s work with something familiar and enjoyable.  I have tried in the questionnaire to pick that up.

In the end, the only way of finding out what suits you is to try it !  I hope my database will make it possible for you to get together with people who are friendly, tolerant and forgiving – and that you will be the same.  Happy music making !
